Mentoring Confidentiality In Our Experiential Learning Model.
Effective mentoring
relationships typically involve disclosure and sharing of critical incidents or
consequential learning events. As such, the development of trust through
commitment to confidentiality is an essential component of STEM Coliseum’s Experiential
Learning Mentoring Model.
The following are principles and guidelines that apply to
one-on-one and one-to-many experiential learning mentoring relationships:
- The overarching purpose of the model is to foster student skill advancement and competency mastery, not evaluation. Therefore, mentors are asked to use their best judgment to form communications that are intended for the constructive development of the mentee, creating a risk endorsing learning environment.
- All conversations between mentor and mentee are to be kept confidential unless both parties agree otherwise for a specific topic of discussion. A caveat would be situations requiring responsible mentors or employees to report possible incidents of sexual harassment, discrimination, self-harm, or other activity that violates law or policy.
- Mentors meet regularly to discuss effective mentoring and share experiences. To make these conversations helpful while maintaining confidentiality, mentors agree to the following:
- Mentors can reveal the identities of their mentees to other mentors, with the understanding that information about mentees is to be kept confidential within the program and should be shared on a need-to-know basis for enhanced learning or safety.
- Mentors should not discuss their own mentees with other mentees, or others outside the STEM Coliseum or its partnering programs, without the permission of their mentees.
