Assistive Technology Summer Workshop (3 weeks)

This three week session will immerse teams of students in developing assistive technologies for real clients.

Modeled after Northeastern University's Enable Engineering program, this unique opportunity places high school innovators at the forefront of engineering solutions that empower individuals with physical and cognitive challenges. Students collaborate with clients and mentors on projects aimed at fostering independence and integration into societal activities and life skills. The 3-week camp's objective is to deliver a low-cost device that enhances the daily life of a client. The guiding principles are compassionate interaction, realistic and affordable design, and creativity. Teams of student participants will create and lead the project under the guidance of an adult mentor. This opportunity is ideal for anyone interested in engineering, human-oriented design, programming, and precision manufacturing.

A typical day may involve gathering information and insights into the problem to be solved, identifying possible solutions, preparing design options, and designing, manufacturing and programming the actual device.  As a key partner in last year’s assistive technology programs held at the STEM Coliseum and Learning Center said, “The backup camera was impressive, but the students' enduring lesson may be how compassionate use of technology can affect the human condition.” Join this unique 3-week opportunity to make a difference in someone’s life with your passion for STEM innovation!
