Build Your Own 3D Printer — Build Day
(Assembly & Calibration - session 1)
This hands-on build day guides students through assembling a desktop Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) 3D printer from a kit, wiring it safely, and performing first power-on checks. By the end, learners leave with a reliable, calibrated machine and the confidence to maintain it at home.
Through interactive lessons and hands-on activities, students will:
- Follow a safety-first checklist (hotend/bed heat, power supply, pinch points, cable management).
- Assemble the frame and motion system, route belts, and square/align key components.
- Wire motors, heaters, and sensors; verify homing and endstops on first power-on.
- Calibrate bed level and Z-offset to achieve a consistent first layer; validate with a test print.
- Practice essential care: nozzle swaps, bed cleaning, filament loading/unloading, and troubleshooting.
- Document their build with a take-home maintenance checklist and “first-print” guide.
Grounded in manufacturer assembly guides and shop safety best practices, this program emphasizes repeatable procedures and responsible tool use.
