Proficiency Demonstration Outline

Player Piano

In 1842 another Frenchman developed a player piano that read holes in rolls of paper

 Punch Cards & Tape

In the 1940's Numerical Control (NC) was first used for machine control to advance manufacturing speed and efficiency during World War II.  Punch cards were THE way to communicate with computers well into the later part of the 20th century.

 Jacquard Loom

The history of today's Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines can be traced back to the 1700's and the use of hole in paper  to control weaving looms.  In 1801, Joseph Marie Charles Jacquard (7 July 1752 – 7 August 1834) had developed a machine that punched holes in sheets of paper to control looms (Jacquard looms).

The student will:

  • describe safety concerns specific to milling machine use;
  • demonstrate the ability to properly secure a workpiece to the milling machine vise;
  • demonstrate the ability to properly install a cutter in the milling machine spindle;
  • demonstrate the ability to properly move and adjust the table in the X, Y, and Z directions;
  • demonstrate the ability to properly lock the table and/or quill in the X, Y, and Z directions;
  • demonstrate the ability to properly start, stop, and adjust the spindle speed of the milling machine;
  • demonstrate the ability to properly machine a piece of stock to a specific thickness;
  • demonstrate the ability to properly use an edge finder and DRO
  • demonstrate the ability to properly machine a piece of stock to a specific length;
  • demonstrate the ability to properly drill holes at specific locations;
  • demonstrate the ability to properly remove cutters from the machine;
  • demonstrate the ability to properly clean the machine at the end of the demonstration.

For this, the final part of the milling machine presentation, student will be asked to perform the listed operations.
